Lunar Bench
Lunar Bench is an indoor/outdoor bench made from a combination of molten recycled aluminium and a hand-selected piece of Malmesbury slate stone. The stone was sourced from a quarry close to where the artist lives and is very common in the geological makeup of South Africa’s Cape but is rarely used for anything else but building materials. Two humble materials come together to create a beautiful harmony.
The aim of this piece is to accentuate contrast in balance. The subtle cast aluminium leg embodies lightness, while the large stone represents heaviness. These two materials are manipulated in a way that shows both the contrast between them and the man-made processes that bind them together in sculpture.
