Lunar Bench is an indoor/outdoor bench made from a combination of smolten recycled Aluminium and a piece of Malmesbury Slate stone. The stone was sourced from a local quarry close to where I live and is very common in the geological make up of the Cape, but rarely used for anything else but building materials.
The inspiration and aim of this piece is to to accentute contrast in balance. The subtle cast Aluminium leg embodies lightness, and the large stone represents heaviness. At the same time these two materials are manipulated in a way that shows contrast between them and the man made processes that form them into their sculptures.
